Luxembourgish cuisine
A journey through traditional dishes, with recipes and local recommendations
Lëtzebuerg à la carte!
Luxembourgish cuisine draws its richness from the land, showcasing local products such as potatoes, fruits, vegetables, as well as meat and fish sourced from the country's fields, forests, and rivers. Traditional Luxembourgish dishes are renowned for their flavour and heartiness, with potatoes often playing a central role in recipes, whether sautéed, fried, or mashed. The finest locally sourced ingredients, served with a good wine from Luxembourg’s Moselle region.
Some of the local's favourites are:
- Gromperekichelcher: Deep-fried potato cakes seasoned with onion, parsley, and spices, commonly found at markets and festivals.
- Judd mat Gaardebounen: it features smoked pork collar served with creamy broad beans and potatoes.
- Bouneschlupp: A hearty green bean soup usually made with potatoes, onions, bacon, and sausage.
- Kachkéis: A soft, melted cheese spread often served on bread or with mustard and pickles.
- Rieslingspaschtéit: A savoury meat pie made with pork or veal, encased in pastry and set in a Riesling wine aspic.
- Verwuerelter: A fried sweet pastry, whose name refers to its loosely knotted and irregular shape.
- Wäinzoossiss: a traditional Luxembourgish pork sausage gently flavoured with white wine, garlic, and spices and often paired with mashed potatoes and mustard.
Today, old recipes are being revisited and are finding new momentum, both in family cooking and in haute cuisine.
