Limpertsberg

Limpertsberg is located in the northwest of the capital and is one of Luxembourg’s well-regarded residential neighborhoods. Just a short walk from the city center, the area combines elegant residential architecture, green spaces, and a vibrant urban culture – ideal for families, students, and anyone looking to blend city living with a peaceful atmosphere.

History & Development

After the dismantling of the fortifications in 1867, the development of today’s Limpertsberg began. Where fields and gardens once lay, well-maintained residential neighborhoods with wide avenues and classical urban architecture emerged in the early 20th century. During this period, Limpertsberg also became known as a center for rose cultivation: breeders such as Soupert & Notting, Ketten Frères, and Gemen-Bourg made Luxembourg famous across Europe as the “City of Roses.” Millions of roses were exported each year, and to this day, street names, gardens, and the historic Notre-Dame cemetery - which also contains the family grave of the Soupert & Notting breeders - bear witness to this flourishing tradition.

Education also has a long-standing tradition in Limpertsberg: numerous prestigious schools and parts of the University of Luxembourg are located here.

Culture & Leisure

Limpertsberg is not just a residential area but also a culturally lively neighborhood. Nearby is the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, one of the country’s most important performance venues, which regularly hosts international opera, dance, and theater productions.

The expansive Tony Neuman Park provides a green oasis in the neighborhood—with sculptures, rare plants, magnificent rose bushes, and quiet paths that invite walks and moments of relaxation. The park, once part of a private villa, was later donated to the Luxembourg Red Cross and is now maintained by the city.

Another landmark is the Glacis, a large open space on the edge of the district, now used as a parking area. Each year it hosts the famous Schueberfouer - a traditional amusement fair that attracts visitors from both home and abroad. Around the Glacis, numerous cafés, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs offer ideal opportunities to spend the evening in a sociable atmosphere or dance until the early hours.

Lifestyle & Atmosphere

The neighborhood is characterised by a harmonious mix of historic townhouses, modern residential buildings, and spacious green areas. Many streets are lined with old trees, reflecting the elegant character of the area. Thanks to its central location, Limpertsberg is well connected: on foot, by bike, or via public transport, the Old Town, Kirchberg, and the train station district can all be reached quickly.

With its educational institutions, cultural offerings, and a calm yet urban atmosphere, Limpertsberg is regarded as one of Luxembourg’s most appealing neighborhoods—a place where history, culture, and quality of life naturally come together.
