The works – sound objects, writings and drawings – gathered in Rajivan Ayyappan’s second solo exhibition at VEDANZA STUDIOS share a common state: a surface to be viewed and a duration of listening. They feature patterns traced in sound and on material, and repetitions that he calls ‘refrains’; a kind of rhythm or temporal sign before it falls into structure, or a gesture before it becomes language. Like a bird’s song is not only a form of communication, but also a way of marking its territory and claiming its home, these works are such gestures: refrains of familiarity and presence, listening as a way of inhabiting.
