Charles Arendt (1825–1910): Staatsarchitekt
Charles Arendt (1825–1910) is considered one of the most influential architects of the 19th century in Luxembourg. As the country’s first State Architect, he accompanied the transformation of the Grand Duchy on its path toward a constitutional monarchy and played a decisive role in shaping its political, religious, and public buildings.
.His designs combined function and symbolism – they gave form to state authority, created spaces of faith, and opened architecture to a modernizing society. Between representation and everyday life, between permanence and renewal, Arendt forged an architectural language that remains visible in Luxembourg’s urban landscape today.
The exhibition invites visitors to (re)discover Charles Arendt as the architect of a country in the making, whose buildings embody an era of transformation and lay the foundations of a living architectural culture that endures to this day.
