More than a Postcard. Le Luxembourg entre arrivée et départ.
Since the 19th century, Luxembourg has grown into a captivating travel destination. From the initial explorations of travellers from neighbouring countries, a multifaceted tourist landscape has gradually emerged, with the city of Luxembourg at its heart.
As the country’s political, economic, and cultural centre, the city shaped visitors’ impressions. Its stunning location, historic fortifications, and UNESCO-listed Old Town made it a key attraction. In the 20th century, it became a European hub, fostering new forms of travel, from city breaks to business tourism.
The Photothèque de la Ville de Luxembourg traces these journeys through images: from arrival and leisurely strolls to sightseeing, relaxation, and capturing memories. The photographs testify to the movements of travel, social transformations, and a remarkable continuity in the motifs of travel.
For the first time, photographs by Luxembourg-based photographers abroad broaden this perspective, opening views towards Europe, North Africa, and overseas destinations. Travel thus appears as both arrival and departure.
In July and August, additional photographs will be on display on the pedestrian walkway connecting Place de la Gare with the Bonnevoie district—a place where paths cross, people arrive and pass through, and where the theme of the exhibition is directly reflected in the city’s daily life.
The exhibition links arrival and departure, showcasing Luxembourg as both a destination and a starting point. It reveals how travel has evolved, while the curiosity to discover and capture the world endures.
