Choose this one if you like your Hyde psychological.
Spencer Tracy takes over the double role in MGM’s lavish production. Made under the Production Code, it tones down the sexual frankness of its predecessor, turning the story towards repression, guilt and the battle between good and evil. And yes: this is Victor Fleming, fresh from Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
« Victor Fleming’s elaborate MGM adaptation of the Stevenson story has a distinctly Freudian tone, with Spencer Tracy’s repressed Victorian doctor discovering the thrill of unbridled sexuality (as kinky as the censors would allow) as he changes into the louche Mr. Hyde. » (MoMA)
