Literary Baddies Book Club
To kick off our autumn season, Literary Baddies turns to one of the most subversive novels ever written: The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov.
One hot spring, the Devil arrives in Moscow. He brings with him a giant talking black cat with a fondness for vodka, and chaos for a city that has officially stopped believing in either God or Satan. But underneath the mayhem is a love story between the Master, a writer destroyed by the Soviet literary establishment for daring to write about Christ and Pontius Pilate, and Margarita, who loves him enough to make a deal with the Devil to get him back.
Written in Stalin's Soviet Union and circulated in secret for 26 years after Bulgakov's death, it remains a pillar of modern world literature. We will examine this through the lens of evil as revelation, for Bulgakov’s Devil is less a villain and more a mirror exposing greed, cowardice and society’s moral bankruptcy.
Anyone is welcome regardless of finishing the book but beware of spoilers. No age limit, and do not feel afraid to come alone!
