Commission for UNESCO is pleased to participate in LUGA, this great celebration
of nature. This summer, it is organizing a series of conferences as part of its
“Les Rendez-vous de l'UNESCO” event series to present the UNESCO programmes that
encourage us to make peace with nature.

When open-cast mining ceased in the Minett region in the 1970s, barren
lunar landscapes were left behind. In less than 50 years, nature has reclaimed
these former mining areas and transformed them into biodiversity hotspots
worthy of protection and preservation. The inclusion of Minett in the UNESCO
'Man and the Biosphere' (MAB) programme has recognised this uniqueness
internationally. These ecosystems are now helping to sustainably transform the
former industrial region by combining ecological resilience and sustainable
development...
