Fresh, pure, Luxembourg: the capital’s water

Water: a natural resource of Luxembourg City

Did you know that around 60 per cent of Luxembourg City’s drinking water comes directly from its own natural springs? The water rises in places such as Muhlenbach, Septfontaines, Pulvermühl, Grunewald, Kopstal and Birelergrund, surrounded by nature in and around the capital. The remaining 40 per cent comes from the Upper Sûre Lake and complements the city’s water supply.

Before reaching households, the water undergoes strict quality controls. Luxembourg City is firmly committed to providing a safe, sustainable and high-quality water supply. Residents and visitors can therefore enjoy fresh drinking water straight from the tap at any time: clean, carefully monitored and of excellent quality.

Water is also present throughout the public space. Drinking fountains and public taps can be found across the city, allowing people to refill their bottles with fresh water free of charge. Especially on warm summer days, they are a real benefit for residents, visitors and everyone exploring Luxembourg City on foot.

Between valleys, history and legends

Yet in Luxembourg, water is far more than an everyday companion. For centuries, it has shaped the face of the capital. Springs, fountains, rivers and valleys tell the story of the close connection between the city and its water, from historic washhouses and former fortress moats to modern sustainable projects.

Behind every glass of water lies an impressive infrastructure. A complex network of springs, reservoirs and pipelines ensures that Luxembourg City is reliably supplied with high-quality drinking water day after day. An invisible lifeline connecting tradition, nature and modern technology.

Water not only plays an important role in the daily life of the capital but is also closely linked to its history and legends. This is why the Luxembourg City Tourist Office has created its own reusable water bottle featuring Melusina, Luxembourg’s legendary mermaid. The bottle is available from the Luxembourg City Tourist Office and encourages people to make use of the capital’s many drinking fountains and public taps, refilling it with fresh Luxembourg water whenever they are out and about.
