Trounwiessel - change of throne

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has been a constitutional monarchy since 1890, when Grand Duke Adolphe of the House of Nassau-Weilburg ascended the throne. Since then, the country has seen a line of sovereigns who guided Luxembourg through times of change: Grand Duchess Charlotte during the Second World War, Grand Duke Jean in the decades of modernisation and European integration, and Grand Duke Henri, who has reigned since 2000. Each generation has carried forward the monarchy’s role as a symbol of unity, stability, and national identity.

On 3 October 2025, Luxembourg enters a new chapter with the abdication of Grand Duke Henri and the accession of his son, Grand Duke Guillaume. The transition will be marked by official ceremonies: the abdication at the Grand Ducal Palace, the new sovereign’s oath before the Chamber of Deputies, and public appearances that allow citizens to witness and share in this historic moment.

This change of reign highlights both continuity and renewal. It honours the legacy of past Grand Dukes while entrusting the future to a new generation. Peaceful and constitutional, the succession reflects Luxembourg’s democratic values and reaffirms the enduring role of the monarchy at the heart of national life.
