Art Detectives | Art Course | Age: 7-11

Why are there angry rabbits in medieval books? How can a painting trick you into walking into a wall? What makes an everyday object become art?

In Art Detectives, children explore unusual questions through art history, discussion and practical art-making. Each session starts with an investigation and leads to a creation of original artwork. We’ll explore medieval manuscripts, Renaissance perspective, Baroque light and shadow, Cubism and other modern styles, and finish with Contemporary art.

The course is led by Maria Fokina, founder of Art Kid, an artist and arts educator with nearly nine years of experience working with children.

Programme:

27 September · Middle Ages: Marginalia

Discover the strange creatures and stories hidden in the margins of medieval manuscripts. Invent and draw your own creature or illustrated scene.

4 October · Renaissance: Perspective

Investigate how artists create the illusion of depth on a flat surface. Create an artwork using perspective, scale and overlapping.

11 October · Baroque: Light and Shadow

Explore how light and shadow create drama and guide our attention. Experiment with contrast and composition to give your artwork a particular mood.

18 October · Modernism: Experiments

Explore Cubism, abstraction and new ways of seeing. Create an artwork by breaking up shapes, combining viewpoints or experimenting with colour.

25 October · Contemporary Art: What Is Art?

Discover how everyday objects become artworks. Transform an ordinary object or idea by changing its context, meaning or presentation.
