Charrues Mélotte

c. 1881-1945MNAHA CollectionLast used in Bettborn (Luxembourg). The manufacturer's mark can be seen on the mouldboard: «Charrue Melottes AM (Alfred Melotte) Marque de Fabrication Gembloux »This type of plough was invented by Alfred Mélotte in 1881. His factory in Gembloux was very successful, selling 25,000 units per year up until 1935. This plough is just one of many types produced by the Belgian company. The plough was reversible and therefore very practical to use. It sold well in Belgium, as well as in the neighboring countries. After 1945, production declined due to more modern and efficient inventions. The Mélotte factory made a significant contribution to the mechanization of agriculture in Belgium and the surrounding area.
