White Gold

The earth is trembling, but I’m not ready. I’ve been holding on for as long as I could, tucked away in the dark. Saint John the Baptist, 24th of June, is tomorrow: the death knell for asparagus season.  White Gold is a love letter to white asparagus and asparagus pickers - told from the point of view of the asparagus. A proud, young asparagus spear and her weary, tired roots are bracing for the cut.  The roots have produced spears for a dozen years. Now it’s time to go. This spear is part of the very last crop. She will be peeled and boiled (though she doesn’t know that yet), hopefully in Léa Linster’s Michelin-starred kitchen: the ultimate dream. Will this last spear live up to her perfectly shaped ancestors or fail at the final hurdle ? A surreal (cooking) show on the cult of perfection, seasonality and mortality about and by the queen of the springtime.
