The Animal Room

EN Martin Crimp turns once more to musical form to probe the edges of language, identity, and reason. Directed by Christian Lapointe and composed by Crimp’s long-time collaborator Roald van Oosten, this new creation unfolds as a theatrical concert poised between pop and philosophical fable.

The voice of a woman emerges from the darkness. Confined to an “animal room”, hovering between artificial intelligence and the animal kingdom, she imagines herself into the consciousness of chameleons, cats, and other creatures. Accompanied by a rock band, her songs shimmer with indie brightness yet carry a note of estrangement: what remains of the human when our certainties falter and ecological change becomes irreversible?

Lapointe approaches Crimp’s text as material to be shaped in sound and space rather than illustrated. Scenes slip between music-hall bestiary and rehearsal room, analogue presence and digital echo, in a shifting collage. 

At the centre stands Judith Chemla, seen at the Grand Théâtre last season in Le Procès de Jeanne. The French singer-actress, equally at ease in Molière and Verdi, brings her distinctive fusion of theatrical intensity and musical virtuosity. A Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg co-production, The Animal Room situates the stage as a site of transformation: playful, unsettling and alert to the urgencies of the present.

La musique est du compositeur néerlandais Roald van Oosten qui est un collaborateur régulier de l’auteur britannique. The Animal Room nous invite à un voyage ludique et frôlant l’étrange, tout en explorant des questions du présent, comme l’urgence climatique et la place de l’humain dans un monde en mutation.
