Musical lecture on Women Musicians in 19th century Luxembourg
In 1845, the city council of Luxembourg decided to open a municipal music school. The new school allowed girls and young women from all social classes to study and teach music. In concerts organized by the school, women even performed publicly - something that was still very much frowned upon in the 19th century. Musicologist Danielle Roster (University of Luxembourg) presents new findings about the teachers, students and controversies of the time. Béatrice Rauchs (Conservatory of the City of Luxembourg) plays piano music by Joséphine Schmoll, Edmond de Lafontaine (Dicks) and Clara Schumann, who had played in Luxembourg in the 19th century.
