Description

Talk

with Chantal Georgel, conservatrice générale honoraire du patrimoine (Musée d’Orsay)

Although landscape painting is a classic feature of museum galleries, there was a time when it was considered a minor genre. From the mid-19th century onwards, with the advent of plein air painting, this motif came back into fashion. Landscape painting was then driven by a growing interest in nature, associated with the discovery and invention of new spaces, both real and imaginary, as well as new technologies (including photography). From a pictorial object, it became a cultural issue when the fragility of the natural environment became apparent, followed by the urgent need to protect and preserve it.Session 1:The invention of landscape (15th century-1830) from Rome to Barbizon
