Description
..‘In the Garden: The Art of the Ephemeral’ is an invitation to enter the enchanting universe of gardens in different seasons and styles across Europe. The Luxembourgish photographer, Marianne Majerus, sees gardens as works of art where the materials are living entities constantly changing with the seasons and time passing. In her photography, she invites us to find beauty and solace in ephemeral moments when the conjunction of light, plants and a gardener’s skill allow us a glimpse of paradise. Through her eyes, we can sense the energy of the natural world in an endless cycle of death and renewal: the irresistible awakening of spring, the exuberance of high summer, the gentle decay of autumn and return to earth of winter. For the artist, cultivating our gardens, and nurturing the soil, plant and animal communities of the earth, is an act of faith in the future.Marianne Majerus is today one of the finest contemporary garden photographers. Before specialising in gardens, she was a successful landscape and portrait photographer, illustrating books on history, food and travel. Examples of her portraits are held in the collections of The National Portrait Gallery in London, The Arts Council of Great Britain, the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel (CNA), and BCEE, Luxembourg. After her major portrait exhibition Face Outside in Luxembourg and London (1995) she began concentrating on photographing plants and gardens, working closely with international designers who have been transforming garden design in recent decades. Her distinguished reputation granted her access to many of the most beautiful private gardens in Europe and further afield. She is the sole photographer for over 50 books published in Britain, Europe and America, including among them her bestselling Garden Design: A Book of Ideas with Heidi Howcroft, Highgrove, A Garden Celebrated about King Charles III’s private garden, and Luxembourg, Land of Roses. Her work is published regularly in major garden magazines and has been honoured by awards including International Garden Photographer of the Year (2010), British Garden Photographer of the Year (2002, 2011) and European Garden Photographer of the Year (2018, 2023). Marianne's latest book, 'Garden Photography: The Art of the Ephemeral', which includes works from this exhibition and her exhibitions at the Parc de Merl (June - September 2025), will be published in May 2025 by Editions Guy Binsfeld.
