.The largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is home to millions of people, has unique biodiversity, and plays a vital role in regulating the climate. But in just 50 years, over 17% has been destroyed and we are close to a tipping point where parts of the forest may turn into a savannah.
One of the main drivers? Industrial cattle ranching for the global market, including Europe.
The good news: a new law, the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), originally set to come into force at the end of this year, could protect over 8 million hectares worldwide by 2035.
The bad news: industry lobbyists want to delay and weaken the EUDR. Meanwhile, EU leaders are pushing a trade deal with Mercosur that would increase meat imports from Brazil, fuelling deforestation.
This year, world leaders will meet in the heart of the Amazon for #COP30 in Belém, Brazil. This is our moment to move from empty promises to real action.
Join us on October 23 to urge Luxembourg to oppose the EU-Mercosur deal and defend the EUDR. Let’s demand real action to #RespectTheAmazon: no delays, no loopholes.
