Description
with Totorro + Ebbb + First Mote
The Congés Annulés Opening Night is like the pizza on which the chef combines some of their favourite ingredients, just to keep you wanting more!
Totorro is a pretty unique band, kind of hard to pin down. Some call their music math-rock to point out how complex the song structures are, but they actually feel more like stories being told. No singer here: it's all about the two guitarists, the bassist, and the drummer doing their thing in this instrumental music. After a well-deserved break (six years!), Totorro is back in action in 2025 with a upcoming new album, so it’s a real treat to have them at the Congés Annulés!
Despite being together for a relatively short period of time, Ebbb have already landed on something truly singular. Drawing on a diverse range of influences, the band (comprised of producer Ceylan and vocalist Will Rowland, with added live drummer Scott MacDonald) carefully weave the electronic worlds of gabber and techno with ambient pop and folk to produce a shapeshifting blend which defies convention – an idiosyncratic hybrid of sounds that the group describes as “Brian Wilson meets Death Grips.”
After pre-pubescent jam sessions in the garage, digging into the heavy riffs and rhythms of Soul Sacrifice, TNT and Little Wing, Jamie Reinert and Christophe Demart eventually got round to getting some stuff on tape under the moniker First Mote. It’s taken around 20 years, but don’t be fooled, their instrumental communion is as rough as ever. Electric baritone guitar and drums are at the centre of things, since neither of them have the real courage to sing.
