Description

LIEU : Casino Display, 1, rue de la Loge, Luxembourg

As part of his artist’s residence at Casino Display and the University of Luxembourg, artist Sam Erpedling organises a series of events combining music, technology, and artistic research. The series will span the entire period of his residence.

.

The second event brings together Sam Erpelding and philosopher Dave Kartheiser, along with other guests. The evening will be accompanied by a discussion surrounding ethics in ecoacoustics and digital lutherie. Together, they will offer insights into contemporary ecoacoustics, computer-generated music, and cross-disciplinary collaborations in a mixture of lectures and performative experiences, creating a space in which acoustic and electronic sounds merge into an experimental and vibrant environment.

Through this encounter, the public is invited to reflect on how sound, ecology, and technology intersect within today’s artistic practices. The event highlights the ethical dimensions of working with natural soundscapes and explores how digital lutherie, the art of crafting new digital instruments, can open innovative approaches to sound and listening.

The evening concludes with a concert between Sam Erpelding and Dave Kartheiser.

Biography

David Kartheiser is a Luxembourgish musician, educator, and philosopher. He has been active in the Luxembourgish music scene for nearly two decades, most notably as the bassist of the post-hardcore band ARGON. As co-founder of Kréiennascht asbl, he oversees communication, organisation, and international band bookings, and has contributed to projects such as LUGA.

Kartheiser studied at the University of Vienna, specialising in social pedagogy and counseling. His research explored perceptual change and racism, and his bachelor’s thesis examined crisis-induced alterations of perception in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. He later pursued philosophy, focusing on intercultural philosophy and the philosophy of religion, with particular interest in Byzantine, medieval, and Southeast Asian thought.

His master’s thesis was devoted to the concept of time and being, aiming at a rapprochement and reconciliation of the teachings of Aurelius Augustinus, Immanuel Kant, and Sri Aurobindo Ghose.
