DISCOVER LUXEMBOURG is an annual urban fun walk which is organized by G-Media, publisher of www.chronicle.lu, for the ninth year in succession and is supported by the City of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg City Tourist Office. This year, it will take place on Saturday 10 September 2016 in Luxembourg.

The principle of the event is for participants to enter a team on a discovery voyage around Luxembourg city while having fun and sampling its lush history, rich culture, delicious gastronomy, exciting technology. All teams will follow a series of clues to eight event stations at which they undergo entertaining “challenges” to win points. These challenges consist of tasty gastronomic samplings, intriguing cultural and historical puzzles, and active sporting elements, along with some stimulating brain-teasers. Main discovery themes are history, culture, gastronomy and technology. While the route and areas of Luxembourg-city presented during the event change every year, they always lead through the most beautiful historic districts of the capital city. The full route will takes up to four hours whereas the alternative family route is shorter. At the end, a prize-giving ceremony will reward the winning teams.

 

Who can participate?

Teams: Between 50 and 100 teams of four people are expected to participate in the event. Teams will represent clubs & associations, companies/offices, tourists, and families/friends. In fact, anyone can enter. The only stipulation is that at least one member of the team is over 18 years of age, for security purposes. This will ensure that teenagers can participate, as well as families with children. As last year, there will be two courses in operation, a short course for families with young children, and a longer course for corporate, clubs & associations.

Individuals: A number of team slots are also being kept for individuals and tourists who may register shortly before or at the day of the event.

 

Routes

There will be two different routes, with the SHORT ROUTE at 6km and the LONG ROUTE at 10km. The Short Route will be buggy-friendly, should families wish to bring toddlers and babies with them (under 5s can join a team as a non-contributing member). The Long Route will be more challenging, physically. Some challenges will test the strength and endurance of the participants…

 

Information Pack: Before they start out on the courses, each team will be given an Information Pack, containing information from a number of Event Partners and Sponsors, as well as a city map and pens, as well as details of WiFi and certain Apps. Some of this information could be useful during the event when trying to solve clues…

 

Format: Starting from the Place Guillaume, participating teams will leave at 3-minute intervals on foot and will follow a series of clues to eight Event Stations, depending on the course chosen, and at which they will undergo entertaining “challenges” to win points. These challenges consist of tasty gastronomic samplings, intriguing cultural and historical puzzles, and active sporting elements - along with some stimulating brain-teasers. All will be fun with something for everyone! Please note that not all team members participate in all challenges and it is up to each team to nominate who represents the team in each challenge. All teams need to bring with them is strong walking shoes – the event is expected to take each team three to four hours to complete – and protection against the weather (sun hats, sun cream, umbrellas, ….). All teams are asked to turn up at least 20 minutes before their allotted start time which will be communicated to them by email, before 12:00 noon on Friday 9 September 2016.

A maximum of 100 points is available at each Event Station. Each team will have four hours to complete the course which will take place across the city. No special physical training or knowledge about Luxembourg city is required. So teams just need to turn up on the day, and enjoy themselves! Please note that all information on the day will be in French, German & English.

Finish Station: The event concludes with a prize-awarding ceremony at the Finish Station at around 19:00. Prizes will be awarded to around one third of the participating teams. Food & drink will be available for purchase during the accompanying musical entertainment. The location of the Finish Station will be revealed during the event…

Charity: the event is supporting a charity with offices locally. This year the charity supported will be d’Stëmm vun der Strooss. In previous years, it was Omega 90, the Schengen Peace Foundation/ World Peace Forum, Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner, SOS Villages d’Enfants Monde, Special Olympics Luxembourg, Alzheimer’s Association Luxembourg, Luxembourg Air Rescue and the Croix Rouge. In addition, the organisers are aware of a number of companies that are raising money in sponsorship for their own nominated charities.

Individuals can register on Saturday 10 September 2016 from 11.a.m. at the Discover Luxembourg desk in front of the Luxembourg City Tourist Office, at Place Guillaume II. Price: 15€ per person.
