Two composers, a century apart, both drawn to the same idea: writing 24 preludes – short pieces that distil a single mood or idea – one in every key. Frédéric Chopin’s are fleeting and poetic, like passing thoughts. Dmitri Shostakovich’s are bold, intricate and each paired with a fugue – where a single theme is passed from voice to voice like a conversation. Together, they’re a kaleidoscope of emotions, from the intimate to the explosive. The pianist Yulianna Avdeeva, known for her clarity and power, presents a vast selection of these preludes – an endurance test, a showcase and an adventure for the ears...
