Artistic Process During Residencies (Part 1/2)

Since its inception, Casino Display has been hosting artist residencies. At the core of Casino Display’s mission lies a sustained focus on artistic creation and research processes, as well as on the forms of experimentation that take place within these residencies. Residencies offer artists the time and space to engage with a new environments and to continue developing their research, driving their practices in new directions.  

Taking place in two parts over two days, this roundtable will focus on artistic process, including presentations by artistic directors and coordinators of various residency programs.  

As roundtables are usually limited to a single day and often remain open-ended, the decision was made to extend this format across two days. On the first day, two speakers will present their institutions, while the other two will respond to these presentations. On the second day, the roles will be reversed.  

Ellen de Haan  

Ellen de Haan (1991, NL) is general director and co-founder of the art space het resort, and also a graphic designer. She has previously set up projects for emerging artists, such as the post-academic mentoring program about:blank and the sales platform De salon. Many of her initiatives have a DIY vibe and focus on supporting creators. She is committed to giving artists more ownership and control within the field of arts. With a love for printed matter, De Haan is also co-organizer of SPREAD zinefest, and publishes and designs the posters and publications for het resort. In recent years, she has worked for the Mondriaan Fund, Academie Minerva, Noordenaars, Kunstpunt Groningen, and BNO, among others. She lives and works in Groningen and studied graphic design at Academie Minerva (Groningen, NL).  

Camille Richard  

Camille Richard is an author and independent researcher, living and working along the Saint Lawrence River, between Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal and Wolastokuk/Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies. Her research focuses on conceptual and contextual artistic, curatorial, and institutional practices that redefine exhibition parameters while developing alternative methodologies for knowledge production and transmission.    Holding a masterʼs degree in art history from the Université du Québec à Montréal, her curatorial practice unfolds in various forms, including exhibitions, publications, and reflective workshops. She has also participated in residencies and shared her research at La Chambre Blanche (2021) and DARE-DARE (2023), andreceived the Hnatyshyn Foundation Young Curators Residency Grant for Fogo Island Arts (2025).    Since 2021, Camille has been dedicating a large part of her energy to the general and artistic direction of Est-Nord-Est, where she reflects on ways to make institutional structures more loving and inclusive.
