An immediate hit, it won Joplin a posthumous Pulitzer for its powerful themes of civil rights and education. Following their 2018 sell-out season with A Man of Good Hope, the exuberant South African ensemble Isango returns to Luxembourg with this revival, postponed from earlier this year. Set up by British director Mark Dornford-May and South African performer Paulina Malefane, Isango draws on talent from Cape Town’s townships to mount acclaimed productions, including The Magic Flute. They bring with Treemonisha promise of “a different sound-world” yet still “from the same solar system as Joplin’s”.
