For the start of the season at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg the Belgian stage director Luk Perceval and Turkish writer Aslı Erdoğan add a philosophical dimension to Mozart’s singspiel Die Ensführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio), free from humoristic scenes, that goes beyond oriental stereotypes.

They move the storyline into a fast-tracked, globalized world in which the contrast between Orient and Occident has long since been obliterated and nobody can find a way out of the “inner Serail”.

On the occasion of this coproduction with the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Nationaltheater Mannheim the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg and the Institute Pierre Werner present a talk on 1 October 2022 at 18:30 with the Turkish writer who lives in exile in Berlin.

In this talk preceding the opera performance, Caroline Mart (RTL) will speak with Aslı Erdoğan about her life, her literary work and her Mozart adaptation.

Aslı Erdoğan, born in 1967 in Istanbul, is not only a highly renowned Turkish contemporary writer, but also a particle physicist, columnist, feminist and human rights activist. In Turkey and all over the world she is a symbol for the resistance against the despotic rule of her home country. Her literary works (i.e. The City in Crimson Cloak, 2007 or The Stone Building and Other Places, 2018) have been translated into over 20 languages.

Erdoğan has received a large variety of prices: Most notably she was awarded the Sait-Faik price, the most significant literature award in Turkey in 2010, the Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Price in 2017 and the Prix Simone de Beauvoir in 2018.

As adamant supporter of the Kurdish minority in Turkey, Aslı Erdoğan was arrested along with 22 other journalists after the failed military coup in her country and held in prison for months.
