A portrait of 86-year-old maestro Wang Xilin, one of China’s foremost classical composers. During the 1960s, he was the target of severe persecution, enduring beatings, imprisonment and torture. The film explores the body and soul of a man scarred by life but still capable of deep and sincere compassion. With excerpts from his Symphonies, Wang revisits some of the horrifying events that live on in his memory as examples of an era that saw the dehumanization of the entire Chinese nation.

« This is a quietly radical political act, a testimony now woven into so many different forms it can never again be suppressed: the devastating, riveting story of a life dedicated to the work of art, delivered as a work of art. » (Variety)
