Fang Xiuying Hong Kong-France-Allemagne 2017 | Wang Bing | documentaire | vostEN | 86' | digital |
> Léopard d'or, Festival international du film de Locarno 2017
In a quiet village in southern China, Fang Xiuying is sixty-seven years old. Having suffered from Alzheimer's for several years, with advanced symptoms and ineffective treatment, she was sent back home. Now, bedridden, she is surrounded by her relatives and neighbours, as they witness and accompany her through her last days.
« There is no denying the visceral power of Wang’s insistence on looking encroaching death, as it were, in the eye and the filmmaker exercises appropriate restraint when the final moment does come. Mrs. Fang is allowed her own personal, minutely detailed Calvary as an individual but, especially because we know so little about the woman herself, in a sense she becomes all of us, as death will come knocking on all our doors sooner or later. » (The Hollywood Reporter)
« A visual poem of rare intensity: both desperate and sublime. With Mrs. Fang, Wang Bing teaches us a great lesson, not only in terms of cinema, but also humanity, establishing himself once again as a true master of narrative reality. » (Cineuropa)
