Jean-Luc Godard ne propose pas une histoire chronologique du Septième Art mais plutôt une double exploration, un voyage dans l'histoire de notre siècle, au pays des images et une exploration de la création de Godard lui-même, un autoportrait du cinéaste. C'est l'histoire des émotions suscitées par le cinéma et l'histoire de la solitude du créateur. Histoire(s) toujours inachevées et pourtant passionnées car, dit Godard, « il faut brûler les films, les brûler d'un feu intérieur ».
