Known as the «devil’s violinist» during his lifetime, from 1802 to 1817 Niccolò Paganini created a pinnacle of virtuoso music for solo violin: his 24 Caprices. In 1998 the young Russian violinist Ilya Gringolts won the «Premio Paganini», the violin competition named after the composer. At the age of only 16, he became the youngest prize winner in the history of the competition. As the interpreter of many world premieres, he is predestined like no other to discover unexpected connections between Paganini’s Caprices and the Sei capricci (1976) by the Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino – and to reveal Paganini’s modernism and Sciarrino’s virtuosity. An evening in the tradition of great violin music.
