Buergbrennen

On the first Sunday after Carnival, huge bonfires are lit across the country as a way of chasing away the winter. Each village has its very own ‘Buergbrennen’. It is a tradition that brings locals together as they all gather to watch the stakes burn down. Usually, local youth clubs take it upon themselves to build the construction, using all kinds of flammable materials, such as branches, logs, straw and even old Christmas trees. No ‘Buergbrennen’ would be complete without some traditional Luxembourgish dishes, such as Bouneschlupp (green bean soup), Ierzebulli (pea soup) and Glühwäin (mulled wine).
